Has anyone got dentistry done abroad?

I hear that a lot of people go abroad for dentistry, plastic surgery etc.

I would really like to get porceleans/veneers but, as you probably know, they are bloody expensive! Has anyone been to Thailand etc for this reason?

How did you research where to go? Were the results %26amp; the price worth it?

Has anyone got dentistry done abroad?
Sigh. I'm not sure if I'm more bothered by people pursuing this option or the fact that with are $%^%26amp;ed up healthcare/insurance "system" patients have to consider this.

In a nutshell, here's the deal. You're basically outsourcing your care. Why's it so cheap? usually lower overhead. And the results may be fine! But what if something goes wrong? Do you fly BACK to Bulgaria or Thailand to make the dentist fix it? Hmm. You can go to a local dentist, but he's gonna be kinda skeptical about messing with someone else's work, or may say, "Oh, this is screwed up; you need to replace it all."

If you MUST go out of country, try to find a dentist who was EDUCATED in an industrial country: US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Sweden, etc.

I have seen some APALLING "dentistry" from Pakistan, China and Africa where people get stuff done just on a street corner. That doesn't mean all dentists there are bad, of course. Places like Egypt, Mexico and other "2nd world" countries are a toss-up. There's some fine dentists there but some bad ones as well.

To be fair, I've seen some lousy veneers in the US - I saw a patient from California who was visiting my state and wasnt' super impressed with his veneers (I had to cement one back on, so I got a good look.) Ironically, you could tell this patient was thinking, "Man, I wish I was back in Cali - I'm surprised people in New Hampshire even know what veneers are!" Yeah.... We've got traffic lights too!
Reply:My friend got all of his teeth replaced in Rio de Janeiro and is perfectly satisfied; he did this for about a third of what he would've paid here, even with the airfare and hotel!
Reply:not a good idea. i've seen some awful things come out of mexico. we have retirees that think they are getting a deal and within a couple years everything falls apart or is decayed around terible margins. not to mention that you want a place that has the high sterilization standards that the us and canada have. it's the old you get what you pay for.
Reply:I can only assume that you are asking this question because you are considering seeking dental care abroad. Any non-third world country can have dentists providing excellent care. The only question I would ask is, how in the world are you going to find out which dentist in any foreign country is right for you? It's hard enough for people to find a good dentist in their own neighborhood where they can get recommendations from friends and co-workers. What are you going to do if you have trouble with your dental services six months after you return to the states?

QUITE SERIOUSLY, two of my favorite and seemingly best qualified dental instructors in school were from overseas. One was from Iraq and the other from Iran. FAR from Iraq and Iran, as they were practicing in the USA, but they were trained in their homelands. You just can't say what country has the best dentists as a blanket statement.
