Could parts of Dentistry be down graded to allow "lesser qualified technicians" to work standard dentistry?

Cleaning and filling teeth cannot be as complicated an operation as it's made out to be, by any stretch of the imagination. The current situation in the UK is that millions are receiving "excessively sub standard care or none at all" with some even reverting to extracting their own teeth (stone age like) in desperation. If qualified doctors are beyond working for National Health rate of pay and there is no more left in the pot to give, then our dear "Labour" government, break away from the status quo and arrange some form of affordable alternative, it's your duty to manage. Help the poorer in society who probably voted for you in hope of better things to come and are feeling very let down by you. We hear you continually preaching "healthy options" no smoking, no exessive drinking , no this, no that, what could really be worse for a persons health than a mouthful of rotting teeth and maybe gum disease as well, so come on Labour Government what will you do about it, and when?

Of course you could delegate parts of Dentistry to "lesser qualified technicians". However, that would require de-regulation of dentistry and healthcare in general. Get the ineffective government out of the doctor-patient relationship and good things will start to happen.
Reply:i am a dentist from India %26amp; i am shocked to know that uk is facing same problems like our country when it comes to health.

retaining qualified doctors in govt. service is quite a challenge for administration here as well as most people prefer to practise independently and earn pots of money.

in such a scenario, why is your "dear labour government" throwing away doctors from other countries with all the disastrous arrogance?

if a doctor from a foreign country leaves his home and loved ones in hope of earning a little money BUT provides invaluable service to society,WHAT IS THE HARM?
Reply:If the government wanted enough dentists they should have stopped closing dental schools down. Do they think dentists just appear out of thin air? %26gt;:(

Anyway in answer to your question, yes, there are two groups of professionals who can carry out some dental procedures. Dental hygienists can clean %26amp; polish teeth, place temporary fillings, fissure sealants and a few other things. Dental therapists can do all that and extractions of milk teeth, fillings of adult teeth etc. All of this occurs under written instuction from the dentist who is in charge of planing and managing the treatment so it's more like deligation although some dental auxillieries can be very skilled.
