Should I do "sleep" (sedation) dentistry for a root canal?

I am getting a root canal. The dentist is charging me $200 for the sleep dentistry pill. I realize that the tooth will be numbed, so I won't feel much, if anything. Should I also pay $200 for sleep dentistry?

Should I do "sleep" (sedation) dentistry for a root canal?
It is not necessary to be put to sleep for a root canal. As you said, you'll be numb and wont feel it. We generally only put people to sleep for dentistry when they have a severe phobia and are unable to tolerate dentistry, then they become a danger to themselvs as well as the doctor. If dentistry does not bother you and you are able to sit still in the chair during the procedure, save yourself $200.
Reply:NO. Man that is just rape if you ask me. Your mouth is going to be soooo numbed up and you will not feel a thing, so why do your liver more damage? $200 is high way robbery. Do not do drugs. You will not feel a thing, unless the Dr. does not know what he is doing, and hurts you. Don't let him/ her hurt you, tell them that you are not numbed up yet if you still feel it.
Reply:A root canal is very painful, due to the removal of the nerve itself, but if you think you can bear it go ahead without it. You will probably need alot of novacaine to put up with the pain, but you don't have to have the sleeping pill. It's your choice.
Reply:NO! I stayed awake for a Wisdom Tooth Removal and is was weird but tolerable. I was able to go home a lot sooner than the other people that had the sedation. That is way more intense than a Root Canal!!!!!
Reply:It depends if it's worth two hundred dollars to you. My root canal was uncomfortable, but what visit to the dentist isn't? If I was wealthy, I might consider it, because wealthy people are soft anyway.
Reply:nope....hubby just had the lidocaine shots around the tooth and he said it didn't hurt a bit and i have seen him after having a tooth pulled and he crys like a little girl...but not after the root canal, he took the whole family out to eat at the buffet...lol....he says root canals dont hurt a bit during or afterwards.....good luck
Reply:Dont go for that. You can get an injection that will numb you but u will be concious thru out.I know ofsomeone who was in a coma for 2 months and woke up with brain damage after being put to sleep during a root canal.scary huh?
Reply:I had a root canal last week and today I have to go get the mold made for the crown. I hate going to the dentist, but I've had root canals several times and got through it without sedation. I'm sure you can, too. It's not a pleasant experience, though, and I did feel a little pain, but not enough to make me want to jump out of the chair. So I guess it depends on whether you can really afford the extra $200 or not. Believe me, I'm really nervous about dentists, but I've managed to do root canals a number of times. I do think sedation dentistry's a good idea, though. You'll do okay whichever way you choose. Good luck.
Reply:NO...I've had seven root canals...no need to be put out...have them numb it up good and any time you feel any pain let them know and they will numb it up some more. Trust the dentist...you'll be fine!!
Reply:I wouldn't, plenty of people get a root canal done without needing it.
Reply:No. No need to go to sleep root canal's aren't neccessarily as bad as you may think if you have the right dentist. being put to sleep usually cost a little more too. Just calm down and relax before you go and let he/she give you the novacain (or whatever the numbing drug is) and be patient. If you picked the right dentist , you won't feel a thing and you'll leave that office feeling like a million bucks. GOOD LUCK!!!
Reply:yes, if you're a puss.
