Is dentistry a disgusting or gory profession?

hi,

i was wondering if dentistry is a disgusting or gory profession as i was hoping to go into it and if it is how people feel about all aspects of dentistry and if the gory and disgusting bits would put them off?

tom

Is dentistry a disgusting or gory profession?
If you hate the sight of blood, you might consider it gory. If that doesn't bother you, though, you would consider it to be very interesting. Watch some TV shows with surgical procedures and see what you think about the blood and gore. If you have to look away - you'll know.
Reply:I think it is a great idea and dentists are always in demand ,so you won't have to worry about not getting a pay check ,right
Reply:I personally would not think about being a dentist. I think that it is disgusting to dig around in people's mouths all day
Reply:In some ways it is "gross," but I absolutely love being a dentist. And it's a second career for me.

I would suggest you "shadow" a dentist to really see what we do. Maybe your dentist would let you.
Reply:I use to work as a dental assistant before I started staying home with my daughter.

You definitely have to be able to handle some "gross" situations. I personally was never grossed out by anything that I saw. Others might be though. I loved working in the dental office and getting to know my patients. I think the dentistry field has alot of benefits to it!

Good luck to you if you decide to go into it!
Reply:Its a good profession.I never dreamt of becoming a dentist before but because of constant agitation by family,I become one. It's alright. It's not bad either. Also, you get to add up to your knowledge in the field because not everyone has the same cases.Checking on other people's mouth may look disgusting, most especially when a person has poor oral hygiene, but you'll be amaze on the things that you could do and the end result, which is quite fulfilling on the dentist's part. So,I think you could give it a shot.Only,we have to be cautious also on the things we have to do,on what is right, what is wrong, the correct practices and all that.Cheers!
Reply:Dentistry is a great field to be in right now. Occasionally somebody comes in with a disgusting mouth, but I just ask them to brush and/or rinse with mouthwash before I get to work. Not a big deal at all.

Dentistry only has to be as bloody as you want it to be. I personally enjoy surgery and don't shy away from the "bloody" procedures, but there are many dentists who refer out even minor surgical procedures to specialists.

Find a dentist in your area who will let you shadow him. Just let him know you are interested in becoming a dentist and ask if you can come observe for a day or two. That's how I decided that I wanted to be a dentist.
Reply:if you have developed the the ability to tolerate and withstand unhealthy people blowing bad breath into your face, day after day, week after week, year after year for the rest of your "life" if you can call that a life. You need every inoculation that exists to protect yourself from their diseases, but you cant stop the stench and the odor.

Good "luck"
