Extreme dental anxiety.. do I need laughing gas, laser dentistry, AND IV sedation?

I have EXTREME dental phobia. I might need some cavity fillings. I've heard about waterlase laser dentistry, but still heard someone still needed a shot for it, just no drill. I've also heard people taking laughing gas and still being awake and feeling pain. I took 1mg of xanax the other night and it didnt do much. What should I do? Just find a dentist with laughing gas, laser dentistry, and just in case IV sedation for a cavity filling? I cannot see a needle going towards my mouth, not as long as I am somewhat conscious. Please help... this is from bad childhood experience with dentists.

laser dentistry is an option for some. depending on how deep your cavity is, you may need to be numbed up still. if this is an interest to you, call around to different dentists to see who does laser dentistry. just a warning, you may be paying more out of pocket to have it done with a laser. nitrous oxide, laughing gas, will not put you to sleep. it is a mild form of sedation meaning you will feel a sort of high. you will be aware of everything. if your dental/needle phobia is this extreame, i do not recommend you use nitrous alone with out other medications to accompany as given to you by your dentist. if none of this helps, find a dentist in your area that does IV sedation. do whatever it takes before your simple fillings turn into root canals.
Reply:You would be a good candidate for IV sedation. It's just one small poke to start the IV and all medications go through there. Some actually fall asleep because the medication relaxes them so much, but they are still coherent enough to open your mouth if they tell you to.
Reply:You can ask your dentist if they will provide Nitrous Oxide to you. However, whenever I ask my dentist this (as I did at one point have extreme dental phobia), she said that only the Oral Surgeon used this method of sedation. They would not allow me to have any. Of course, this varies from doctor to doctor and you may stumble upon an office that will be more than willing to accomodate your requests. I wish you the best!
Reply:novacain is the best im afraid, just take the needle, think about somthing else as they poke ya...
Reply:I'm the same way and I went to dentists that could give me laughing gas and iv drip and i was out on most of it and yes some people are like that with the laughing gas but i wasn't and it is called anesthetic awareness but i never heard of laser dentistry
Reply:If you are petrified of just the shot, then you need to have general sedation, where they put you to sleep completely. Most of the time you have to go to the hospital and meet your dentist there to have the treatment completed. Sometimes the dentist can sedate you in their office. Call around and ask, that never hurts!
