Best majors for dentistry?

I'm going to UW next year, and I want to pursue a career in dentistry. What're good majors to prepare for dental school?

I'm currently thinking biology and economics (for when I open up my own practice later on).

Best majors for dentistry?
Economics is a b.s. major for people who want to do economic theory (mostly useful in government and banking). If you want a business background, go for business administration.

You should check the admission requirements of specific dental schools you are interested in - while they'll have minimum university course requirements for biology, chemistry, and others, you don't necessarily have to be a biology or chemistry major.

That being said, the top majors in this study of admissions to medical school were biology, microbiology, and biochemistry (chemistry, chemical engineering, and psychology next in line)

Reply:i think it's teeth implantation!!!
Reply:try orthodontics.
Reply:Actually I think you'd be better served by a small business type of a minor in place of economics. Running your own practice is different than larger scale economics would prepare you for.

And throw in a few psych courses for dealing with staff and terrified patients!
Reply:Dental school requirements are almost exactly the same as med school requirements. Your major doesn't matter, but it's often easier (or required) to be a science major to get into the required science classes.

Econ won't help for what you intend. Think along the lines of business administration or management. Psych can be a good idea, but into psych classes generally don't go into enough detail to be that helpful. They're great GPA boosters though, as are many of the non-math business classes.

College planning for Dentistry/Orthodontics?

If anyone could help me by figuring out some good colleges for Dentistry/Orthodontics, that would be great!

College planning for Dentistry/Orthodontics?
Go to www.petersons.com and use their search feature. You can search by major (pre-dental) and region.
Reply:Not sure where you're looking to go, but Ohio State has an excellent dentistry program. My friends Dad went there and now he has his own practice. If you're looking to save money, you can always go into the Navy and become a dentist. They'll pay for your training and then after you do your time, you'll be able to get out and start your own practice. You have to be an officer, so you'll need a degree in something to start out with.

I wanna do dentistry in usa?
i just want the nitrous oxide
Reply:go to college for 4 years then med/dentistry school for 4 more.
Reply:No thanks, we have enough dentists here. Why not "do dentistry" in India and help your fellow countrymen?
Reply:you must get accepted to college, take a predental/medical course of study. Then you post do graduate work to earn your doctorate including an internsship and then pass Board tests.
Reply:Look up the dentistry program at Ohio State University. All programs are very limited by who they accept though.

My dad went through it and it was something like 6 people accepted for the year.

Career in medicine/dentistry?

m in the UK and have finished my a-levels. i want to come to do pre-dental course in Canada but am not sure about applying to Canada. Do they have pre-dental course before going to university for dentistry?? what is the best option for me and what are the colleges or uni that offer pre-dental courses?

Career in medicine/dentistry?
perhaps you could take this test http://gsx1.com/FreeAptiTest.htm

then they might suggest what the procedure is.

I know it's a long shot but it is free and they must be getting asked for dentists.

Has anyone got dentistry done abroad?

I hear that a lot of people go abroad for dentistry, plastic surgery etc.

I would really like to get porceleans/veneers but, as you probably know, they are bloody expensive! Has anyone been to Thailand etc for this reason?

How did you research where to go? Were the results %26amp; the price worth it?

Has anyone got dentistry done abroad?
Sigh. I'm not sure if I'm more bothered by people pursuing this option or the fact that with are $%^%26amp;ed up healthcare/insurance "system" patients have to consider this.

In a nutshell, here's the deal. You're basically outsourcing your care. Why's it so cheap? usually lower overhead. And the results may be fine! But what if something goes wrong? Do you fly BACK to Bulgaria or Thailand to make the dentist fix it? Hmm. You can go to a local dentist, but he's gonna be kinda skeptical about messing with someone else's work, or may say, "Oh, this is screwed up; you need to replace it all."

If you MUST go out of country, try to find a dentist who was EDUCATED in an industrial country: US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Sweden, etc.

I have seen some APALLING "dentistry" from Pakistan, China and Africa where people get stuff done just on a street corner. That doesn't mean all dentists there are bad, of course. Places like Egypt, Mexico and other "2nd world" countries are a toss-up. There's some fine dentists there but some bad ones as well.

To be fair, I've seen some lousy veneers in the US - I saw a patient from California who was visiting my state and wasnt' super impressed with his veneers (I had to cement one back on, so I got a good look.) Ironically, you could tell this patient was thinking, "Man, I wish I was back in Cali - I'm surprised people in New Hampshire even know what veneers are!" Yeah.... We've got traffic lights too!
Reply:My friend got all of his teeth replaced in Rio de Janeiro and is perfectly satisfied; he did this for about a third of what he would've paid here, even with the airfare and hotel!
Reply:not a good idea. i've seen some awful things come out of mexico. we have retirees that think they are getting a deal and within a couple years everything falls apart or is decayed around terible margins. not to mention that you want a place that has the high sterilization standards that the us and canada have. it's the old you get what you pay for.
Reply:I can only assume that you are asking this question because you are considering seeking dental care abroad. Any non-third world country can have dentists providing excellent care. The only question I would ask is, how in the world are you going to find out which dentist in any foreign country is right for you? It's hard enough for people to find a good dentist in their own neighborhood where they can get recommendations from friends and co-workers. What are you going to do if you have trouble with your dental services six months after you return to the states?

QUITE SERIOUSLY, two of my favorite and seemingly best qualified dental instructors in school were from overseas. One was from Iraq and the other from Iran. FAR from Iraq and Iran, as they were practicing in the USA, but they were trained in their homelands. You just can't say what country has the best dentists as a blanket statement.

Tooth problems? what can be done in modern dentistry?

well i was camping inside a cave this weekend and i was going wild caving and stuff but i was crawling around in this 2ft. by 2ft. hole and i smacked my face into a rock. when i finally got out so i could feel around in my mouth i realized that the tooth in front on top (the slightly bigger 1 ((i know there are 2 of them i only chipped 1 though)) in top in front) was chipped badly i almost knocked off the whole back side of it lol

my question is what can be done in modern dentistry.

i know that they can put a filler in it sorta like a cavity but cant they re-create the tooth? or something like that?

its not actually that bad its kinda thin now and alot is gone but there is no root of the tooth showing. also i have braces but they are comming off in the next 3 or so visits if that effects anything

Tooth problems? what can be done in modern dentistry?
They can put a veneer, or onlay, or cap it...there are all kinds of restorative dentistry available.
Reply:Implant dentistry can recreate a tooth.
Reply:They can bond it, in one visit.
Reply:They can give you completly new tooth if you like, I think they are made from porcelain. It will probablly cost a lot though because that kind of thing is done at a private dentist, but just ask about it next time you go.
Reply:I know of someone who had something similar, she chipped her tooth off, and the dentist was able to fill the chipped piece in with an artificial plastic type filling, and smooth it, and I can no longer tell where she chipped her front tooth. Hope this helps!
Reply:yes they will attatch a fake tooth to the gum and you will not be able to feel any thing on or around the tooth-this happened when my friend smashed her tooth while snomobiling
